ANNUAL UCAR ON-SITE FLU (Influenza) VACCINATION CLINICS
Sponsored by the UCAR Wellness Advisory Committee
Each fall, UCAR's Wellness Advisory Committee (WAC) sponsors on-site flu vaccination clinics at UCAR's Boulder area campuses: FL, CG, ML, and RAF (Jeffco). This event is FREE and open to all UCAR employees, retirees, their spouses/partners and dependent (adult) children 18-25 years of age. Note: For dependent children under the age of 18, it is recommended you work directly with your child's health care provider.

VOUCHERS:
For those who can't attend the on-site clinics, vouchers are available to get the vaccine at any of the following Passport Health facilities listed below. Vouchers are ONLY valid at Passport Health locations and are available October 1, 2009 - December 31, 2009, or while vaccine supplies last. VACCINES:
The Flu Shot - Injection (Free to UCAR staff, retirees, their spouses/partners, and dependent children 18-25 years of age:
The regular flu vaccine contains killed influenza virus of the types selected by the U.S. Public Health Service and the Center for Biologics Evaluation & Research of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The types of virus included are those that have most recently been causing influenza. The vaccine will not give you flu because it is a killed virus vaccine. As with any vaccine, flu vaccine may not protect 100% of all susceptible individuals.
Optional Nasal Flu Spray - FluMist® (Available on request; $19/pp co-pay paid by participants:
The nasal flu spray contains weakened live influenza viruses of the types selected by the U.S. Public Health Service and the Center for Biologics Evaluation & Research of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The types of virus included are those that have most recently been causing influenza. Made from weakened live viruses, the flu spray is engineered not to cause disease. As with any vaccine, nasal flu spray may not protect 100% of all susceptible individuals. The FluMist® is available on request at UCAR on-site locations and Passport Health facilities for $19/pp co-pay paid by the participants. Payments made to Passport Health - cash, check, credit cards, and medical debit cards accepted.
RISKS AND POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
Influenza vaccine generally causes only mild side effects that occur at low frequency. Most commonly, the injection vaccine may cause a sore or tender arm where the injection was given, or possibly fever, chills, headache, or muscle aches. The most common reactions to the nasal flu spray are runny nose in all ages, low-grade fever (100-102F) in young children and sore throat in adults. These side effects usually last 24 to 48 hours. Most people who receive the vaccine either have no reaction or only mild reactions. There is a possibility, as with any vaccine or drug, that an allergic or other serious reaction, or even death, could occur. Also, medical events completely unrelated to the vaccine may occur coincidentally following vaccination.

The Nasal/FluMist® is NOT RECOMMENDED:

- Allergy to eggs or egg products, chicken proteins, or any component of the vaccine.
- Prior history of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS)
- Acute febrile illnesses (Fever over 101ºF)
- Anaphylactic reaction to a previous dose.
- Allergy to thimerosal (preservative found in contact lens solution).
If any of these conditions exist, please contact your health care provider prior to getting the vaccine |

If you have allergy to eggs, egg products, gentamicin, gelatin, arginine or reactions to a previous dose
- Children or adolescents (<17 years) receiving aspirin or aspirin-containing therapy
- The flu spray should not be given to any of the following individuals unless the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks: pregnant individuals,
immunocompromised persons, persons with a history of Guillain-Barre syndrome, persons with asthma or reactive airways disease, or any person with an underlying
medical condition that may predispose to complications of influenza.
- People fifty (50+) years of age or older should NOT receive FluMist®.

H1N1 (Swine Flu) Vaccine - Availability Pending:
UCAR Safety and Site Services (SaSS) and Passport Health in conjunction with national/local health organization, are closely monitoring the H1N1 situation and will notify staff as more information becomes available.
