NOTICE TO PERSONS USING THE
UNIVERSITY CORPORATION FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH
NATIONAL CENTER FOR ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH
OTHER BUILDINGS FITNESS/EXERCISE OR OTHER UCAR/NCAR FACILITIES

Participation in exercise activities and use of the facilities and equipment at the Fitness Centers or other UCAR/NCAR Facilities is voluntary and is not directed or required by UCAR/NCAR.

Before beginning a program of strenuous physical activity, all persons should have a thorough physical examination by a physician who has been informed of such proposed course of activity.

Vigorous exercise can be dangerous for some people. Intense physical activity coupled with certain environmental conditions may aggravate existing asthmatic or other respiratory conditions. Those over the age of 35 and coronary-prone individuals who possess high risk factors should obtain a stress test electrocardiogram prior to beginning any exercise program. Stress tests are particularly important to those who have the following risk factors: overweight, hypertension, diabetes, sedentary life style, cigarette smoking, or family history of heart disease.

ATTENTION FITNESS CENTER USERS

Recent remodeling of the ML and the remote location for the ML Fitness Center has given rise to concerns about safety of staff using the center.  This provides an opportunity to remind all that the Fitness Facilities is a benefit to the employees.  The rooms must remain accessible at all times to minimize obstacles to using them. We hope this change in occupancy in the 2nd basement of the ML does not create an obstacle for anyone to use these facilities. While SASS has agreed to improve security of the building exterior in the proximity of this center, no further steps are being considered for the fitness facilities.

We encourage staff who use any fitness facilities to:

1. Use the buddy system
2. Share your workout schedule with a coworker
3. Locate the phones near and in the fitness centers
4. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
5. Contact Security if anything seems out of the ordinary.
6. Notify Security of any theft of items from the centers.
7. Notify Maintenance if any equipment needs repairs.

TO AVOID INJURY, IT IS IMPORTANT TO READ THE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS ON OR ADJACENT TO EACH ITEM OF EXERCISE EQUIPMENT.

Persons using the Fitness Centers or other Exercise Facilities assume complete responsibility for their well-being in the voluntary exercise programs in which they may engage and understand that no responsibility is assumed by any instructor.

Despite all precautions, there are risks of injury or illness which can occur because of use of the equipment and facilities, and engaging in a program of physical activities at the Fitness Centers or other UCAR/NCAR Facilities and PERSONS USING THE FITNESS CENTERS OR UCAR/NCAR EXERCISE FACILITIES ASSUME SUCH RISKS AND WAIVE, RELINQUISH, AND RELEASE ANY CLAIM WHICH THEY MAY HAVE AGAINST UCAR OR ITS EMPLOYEES OR AGENTS AS A RESULT OF FUTURE PHYSICAL INJURY OR ILLNESS INCURRED IN CONNECTION WITH, OR AS A RESULT OF, SUCH ACTIVITIES OR THE USE OF SUCH EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES, EXCEPT TO THE EXTENT SUCH CLAIM MAY RESULT FROM THE SOLE OR EXCLUSIVE NEGLIGENCE- OF UCAR OR ITS EMPLOYEES OR AGENTS.
