Advance Purchase:

Many (not all) nonrefundable fares require advance purchase. Example: 7-, 14- or 21-day advance.

Instant Purchase:

Most nonrefundable fares require the ticket to be purchased within 24 hours of making the reservation, or purchased to meet the advance purchase requirement, which ever comes first.

Subject to Change:

Even though the airlines may give you 24 hours, fares are always subject to change until they are purchased. There are up to 500,000 air fare changes throughout every day!

Flexibility Required:

Deeply discounted, nonrefundable fares may require to fly at specific times of the day, specific days of the week, Saturday night stays or similar.
The airlines only allow a few seats per aircraft for these fares, and availability is very limited.

Penalties:

Usually $100 per change or cancellation, plus any increases on your new fare, if applicable.

Round Trip Travel Required:

Usually...not always. If round trip travel is required for your nonrefundable fare and you only use it one way, you will probably have to throw away the unused portion.

Nonrefundable Means Nonrefundable!

The airlines will not refund these tickets under any circumstances, even if an employee leaves your company. They no longer issue "travel certificates" for the value of nonrefundable tickets.

All Tickets are Nontransferable!

The airlines do not allow anyone other than the person whose name appears on the ticket to use it. This applies to all tickets, whether they are refundable or not. Picture ID is always required at check in.

Other restrictions may apply to your nonrefundable ticket.
Please consult your professional travel agent for further details.

Changes on Your Outbound Flight:

You start all over. The value of your ticket, minus the penalty, can be applied towards the new fare on the same airline. You are not guaranteed the original fare that you paid.

Changes on Your Return Flight:

As long as you still meet all of the restrictions of the original fare & the original fare is still available, you can change your return for the applicable penalty, usually $100. Most airlines will let you "stand by" for another return flight time, on the same date, without paying the penalty. Penalties are sometimes waived directly by the airline on a case by case basis at the airport.

Complete Cancel:

  • You save the entire ticket to be used toward another trip, on the same airline.
  • The penalty, plus any fare increases on the new itinerary, will be paid.
  • The ticket is returned to your professional travel agent to be exchanged for your new trip.
