Emergency Ride Home

When you commute to work via alternative transportation, you can feel secure knowing that, in the event of an emergency situation, you’re guaranteed a free taxi ride home.  All UCAR/NCAR/UCP staff have access to an emergency ride home.

Alternative transportation includes:

  • Public transit (bus, metro, light rail)
  • UCAR/NCAR Shuttle
  • Carpool
  • Van pool
  • Bicycle
  • Walking

Covered emergencies:

  • Employee or family member becomes ill
  • Employee is unexpectedly required by his/her supervisor to work late, and therefore cannot return home via alternative transportation

Not covered:

  • Pre-scheduled medical appointments
  • Employee chooses to work late and therefore misses bus, shuttle, carpool or van pool
  • Work-related injury
  • Normal work hours do not match shuttle schedule
  • Transit breakdowns or delays
  • Any instance in which transportation could have been scheduled in advance

How you access your emergency ride home depends on your work site.

Colorado Staff
The Guaranteed Ride Home® , a benefit for EcoPass holders that is sponsored by the Denver Regional Council of Governments, provides a free taxi ride home from the office for employees who have an emergency arise on a day that they used alternative transportation.

To access an emergency ride home during business hours, call the receptionist at x1126 (Mesa) or x8700 (Foothills).  After business hours, call Security at x1139.

Non-Colorado Staff

When your need an emergency ride home, call for a taxi and save the receipt.  When your emergency meets the above listed criteria, UCAR will reimburse you for the cost of your taxi home plus a standard 10% tip to the taxi driver (if the tip appears on the receipt).  You may make one stop during your trip if it is related to your emergency – for example, you may need to pick up your child from school if s/he becomes ill during the day, then go home.
