How to Award a Green Star

A truly green organization develops with the participation of numerous employees, each making positive contributions to sustainability while performing their individual staff roles.

A green – or sustainable – organization is one that productively pursues its mission in such a way that protects the natural environment, supports the health and well-being of its employees and community members, and is financially sound.

Green Star Award Eligibility Guidelines

A Green Star should be awarded to an employee who makes special effort to perform their job in a way that has a positive environmental impact, and contributes to the UCAR & NCAR’s sustainability program.   Any UCAR/NCAR employee can award a Green Star to another employee.   Some general examples of actions that would deserve recognition include:

  • Planning a project or work process in a way that minimizes the use of natural resources.  For example, planning a major meeting while making special effort to minimize or eliminate printouts, to take advantage of public transportation, and to use teleconferencing technology to reduce the amount of travel needed.
  • Implementing unique and creative ways to make day-to-day operations more sustainable.
  • Educating coworkers about sustainability actions, such as recycling or conserving energy, in a positive, upbeat and friendly way.

These are just examples.  Many possible actions could support our sustainability efforts in Energy & Water Conservation, Transportation, Recycling & Composting, Zero Waste Events, Green Purchasing, Etc.

Day-to-day activities such as recycling and turning off lights or computers are valuable steps, but are not special efforts that warrant Green Star recognition.

While we appreciate efforts that employees make to be greener at home, the Green Star award may only be used to recognize actions taken at work.

I’m ready! How do I award a Green Star?

  1. Download the Green Star form.  Fill in the required information. There are four copies of a Green Star award in the form. One copy is to recognize the Green Star recipient. One is a coupon that the recipient can redeem in any UCAR Cafeteria for a free drink or snack item (up to $2.00 value).  One is sent to the recipient’s supervisor.  One is sent to Sustainable UCAR to record the recipient’s green accomplishment. When you type in the information in the upper left box, the remaining three boxes will auto-fill.
  2. Print the completed form on recycled paper, and sign.  The form has been designed to fit on a single sheet of paper to minimize natural resource use.  Cut the four quadrants of the form.
  3. Deliver the award. Give the Green Star recipient both the parts of the form labeled “Recipient Copy” and “Cafeteria Copy.”  Send the “Supervisor Copy” to the recipient’s supervisor for added recognition. Send the “Sustainable UCAR Copy” to Kimberly Kosmenko in CG4-1140.
