As the nation moves towards an acceptance of global warming and embraces green design, we must continue to keep a critical eye on what we are being sold. With few standards for green design, "green washing" inundates the marketplace. The building construction industry is perhaps one of the most important places to consider. With nearly 50% of the CO2 emissions generated by buildings and their construction, fluorescent light bulbs and recycled carpet is not enough. How is the industry looking at a more holistic approach? Where is building design headed? Faculty from the Univ. of Colorado are looking at these issues to create a dialog with the construction industry.

Rick Sommerfeld

About Rick Sommerfeld: Rick currently teaches architecture courses focusing on green design and construction, while maintaining a professional design practice specializing in innovative residential and small commercial design. He was selected as the college's "Instructor of the Year" for 2003 and again in 2005. Rick was a Faculty Advisor for the CU 2005 National Solar Decathlon team. His student’s “green” fabrication work has been shown at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and Design Within Reach Studio in Boulder.

“The Global Warming Diet:
Food Climate Connections”

Tuesday, June 17, 2008
12:30 – 1:30 pm

photo of talk This popular talk, delivered to a standing room only audience, is available as a ReadyTalk recording.  No unauthorized copying or reposting permitted.

ABSTRACT
With climate change in the public eye, ideas for business and policy approaches to managing carbon emissions abound.  While more efficient automobiles and renewable energy both sit center stage in the solutions category, agriculture and our industrial food system seemingly play a more minor role in the public eye.  The talk, however, will focus on food, how it is grown, where it comes from, and how changing one’s diet can reduce carbon emissions as effectively as buying a new fuel-efficient car.  The material from this talk comes from a soon-to-be-published book titled, Cool Cuisine:  Taking the Bite Out of Global Warming, that examines the connections between food and energy use and offers solutions for reducing our carbon footprint through consumer education and food choices.

SPEAKER BIO
Dr. Eugene Cordero is an Associate Professor in the Department of Meteorology at San Jose State University in California.  His ongoing areas of research include the study of stratospheric processes and their role in affecting climate.  He is also interested in how personal engagement and action-oriented learning can be used to teach climate change. Cool Cuisine, which is due out in September 2008, is a joint project between San Francisco chef Laura Stec and Dr. Cordero.
