UCAR Chemical Inventories

Have you met a HESS employee who was placing barcode labels on your chemical containers? Ever wondered what all that is about?

UCAR has charged HESS with maintaining inventories of chemicals in all NCAR facilities. The purposes of these inventories are:

  • To make lists, quantities and hazard characteristics of chemicals immediately available to emergency response personnel, such as in case of a fire.
  • To keep track of reportable chemicals. Certain substances must be reported to the State of Colorado when they exceed threshold amounts, otherwise penalties can result.
  • To help labs maintain current MSDS files of chemicals they store and use.
  • To facilitate tracking of chemical movements, such as lending of chemicals between the labs, for the purpose of safety: in case of emergency HESS will provide accurate information about chemicals stored in each affected lab.
  • To help users locate chemicals in other labs that might be able to share, lend or give away chemicals. HESS can identify a chemical by the barcode or locate the owner of a chemical. Additionally, “Find a chemical at NCAR” search page is available to NCAR users.
  • To provide reports of chemical and compressed gas inventories to authorities, UCAR management and researchers themselves upon request.

To track chemicals to be disposed of and help create inventory reports, which are required by waste disposal companies.
