Hearing Conservation

The Hearing Conservation program provides safe practices, procedures and policies to prevent hearing loss. Complies with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements 29 CFR 1910.95.
Employees who are exposed to noise loud enough (85dBA) to cause hearing loss are required to wear hearing protection while working in the areas.  Within UCAR there are several areas that require hearing protection due to higher noise levels. HESS conducts sound level audits to establish baseline levels and does reevaluation when environment or processes change; helps establish engineering plans for reducing noise when possible.
Workers exposed to high levels of noise should contact HESS for obtaining hearing protection devices and to do annual hearing tests.

User requirements:
To be trained in proper wearing of hearing protection and participate in the annual hearing tests

HESS Office:

  • Develops policy
  • Reviews noise levels in facilities and by operations
  • Selects proper type of hearing protection\
  • Conducts annual hearing tests and hearing protection review
  • Trains personnel
