Chemical Waste Disposal

Disposing of unused chemicals is complicated and costly. For example, proper disposal of a small compressed gas "lecture" cylinder can cost $2,000.00. UCAR asks that researchers use their best judgment and order just as much chemicals as they will use up.

We understand that there are situations when labs may have excess chemicals or waste chemicals. HESS will collect, package, and make arrangements for proper disposal of all hazardous wastes. Most hazardous wastes are recycled or incinerated; they are never placed in landfills.

  • Label all waste containers with chemical names of contents.
  • Do not "evaporate" chemicals. Let HESS properly dispose of all materials.
  • Do not attempt to handle, store or dispose of the waste yourself, and please do not flush any hazardous waste down the drains or toilets!

If you have hazardous waste, please call HESS Chemical Waste Specialist at x8625 or x2409.
