Teaching Policy

6-10

UCAR employees may further the educational mission of UCAR by participating, on a regular and formal basis, in instruction at a recognized public or private institution.  Such teaching may be considered either part of the employee's duties or outside employment, as determined by the employee's Director (UCAR/UCP Program Director or NCAR Associate Director).  If teaching is part of the employee's duties, the employee may retain no additional compensation.  If teaching is outside employment, the terms of the Outside Employment policy and procedures apply.  Employees should discuss proposed teaching or lecturing opportunities with their Division or Program Director before formalizing an agreement with the institution at which the teaching will occur.

See Teaching procedures.

Teaching Procedures

(related to Policy 6-10)

Procedures

  1. Determination of Applicability

The employee informs the UCAR/UCP Program Director of NCAR Associate Director, in advance, of formalizing an agreement with the institution at which the teaching or lecturing occurs, and of any proposed activity that falls under this policy. The Division or Program Director determines whether the Outside Employment policy applies. If the activity is deemed by the Director to be outside the employee's duties, the activity is governed by UCAR's Outside Employment policy.

  2. Reimbursement to UCAR

In cases where the teaching and lecturing are considered part of the employee's duties, the UCAR/UCP Program Director or NCAR Associate Director recommends to the Deputy Director of NCAR or the Vice-President for Finance and Administration whether reimbursement from the institution involved should be sought. In making the decision, the Deputy Director of NCAR or the Vice-President for Finance and Administration takes into account whether the teaching and lecturing fall within the UCAR mission and any other factors deemed appropriate.
