Field Project Risk Assessment Policy

4-6

Field projects are an important aspect of UCAR's work. Some field projects will by definition include some level of risk. Field projects are defined as the deployment of facilities and/or staff for the ultimate purpose of data collection to locations away from UCAR or NSF properties located in Boulder and Broomfield, Colorado; Washington, D.C.; and Mauna Loa, Hawaii.

It is UCAR's policy to avoid or reduce to an acceptable level the risk to person and property inherent in field projects. UCAR conducts risk assessments of proposed field projects to identify and analyze the conditions that might contribute to increased risk to UCAR staff or property and then develops a risk management plan to address those risks.

There may be occasions when the risk to UCAR staff or property is so significant, or the cost of implementing effective risk control so high, that UCAR may decide to postpone or abandon travel and activities associated with the field project.

Employees with concerns about a proposed field project should address these issues with their supervisors. If unresolved, these issues may be forwarded up the chain of authority as far as the President's Council for consideration during the approval process.
