UCAR is a consortium consisting of North American institutions that offer doctoral degrees in the atmospheric or related sciences. The member institutions are central to the governance of UCAR overall and to its operation of NCAR and UCP. Each UCAR Member appoints two representatives who are invited to participate in the annual meeting of Members' Representatives and in various other modes.
The Board of Trustees has fiduciary and legal responsibility for all UCAR activities and final authority over the programs and business of the Corporation. Twelve of the 18 Trustees must come from UCAR member institutions; 6 are Trustees-at-Large. The President is an ex officio Trustee. Trustees are elected by the Members' Representatives to serve three-year terms and are limited to two successive terms. The Board of Trustees meets regularly at least three times a year.
Officers of the Corporation include the Board of Trustees Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Assistant Secretaries, Assistant Treasurers the UCAR President, Vice-President for Corporate Affairs, Vice-President for Finance and Administration , Associate Vice-President for Business Services, the Director of NCAR, the Director of UCP and the Deputy Director of NCAR.
The President's Council is the senior corporate management and advisory body to the President, serving in a capacity prescribed by the President. The UCAR Management Committee (UMC) advises the President and the President's Council on matters related to the administration, oversight, and management of all UCAR activities and programs, including UCAR.
The Vice-Presidents of UCAR for Corporate Affairs and for Finance and Administration normally serve as Acting President in the absence of the President, on a three-month rotating basis. In the event that the designated Vice-President is also absent, the other Vice-President serves as Acting President. When both Vice-Presidents are absent, succession as Acting President occurs as follows: Director of NCAR, Director of UCP, Associate Vice-President for Business Services and Deputy Director of NCAR.
