Postdoctoral Fellows (Post Docs) are selected through a competitive process. They are typically given the freedom to pursue research of their own choice and to collaborate with staff and programs throughout UCAR. Initial appointments (Post Doc I) typically last one year, and extensions of up to one additional year (Post Doc II) may be arranged by mutual agreement between the Postdoctoral Fellow and the laboratory or program, subject to the availability of funds. When necessary to complete their research, an extension of up to three years may be granted.

Selection
Postdoctoral Fellows are usually selected from applicants with no more than five years applicable experience beyond the Ph.D., but this criterion may be relaxed if an applicant has changed or is changing fields. Applicants are solicited via national advertising in scientific, educational, or technical publications, and final selection is the result of a competitive review.
UCAR's normal hiring process should be used in the search and selection of Postdoctoral Fellows unless different documentation arrangements have been made with the Human Resources department.
-
Performance
Laboratories and programs are encouraged to conduct annual assessments of Postdoctoral Fellows' progress.
-
Compensation and Benefits
Postdoctoral Fellows receive a salary in conformance with periodic salary surveys by the Human Resources Department. Salary adjustments may occur on an annual basis. A Personnel Profile Change form is submitted to Human Resources to authorize advancement to Post Doc II and the associated salary increase.
Postdoctoral Fellows are eligible for UCAR benefits. See Benefits Eligibility for information on specific eligibility and coverage.

Travel Expenses, Temporary Living Per Diem, and Shipping Allowance
Travel costs for Postdoctoral Fellows are paid in accordance with UCAR Travel Policy. Travel reimbursement for family members may be provided at the discretion of the host laboratory or program. A temporary living per diem, which may be taxable as income, may be granted to cover temporary living expenses. A shipping allowance not to exceed $750 or reimbursement of relocation expenses may be authorized at the discretion of the host laboratory or program.
-
Housing
The Human Resources Department may assist in locating housing. The responsible laboratory or program may advance funds for a housing deposit, if needed. Unless other arrangements are approved by the Travel Office, that advance must be repaid within the first four months of the date of arrival through either biweekly payroll deductions, reduction of per diem payments, or direct billing.
-
Visas
Postdoctoral Fellows who are visitors to the United States may require a visa to enter and work in this country. Although it is the Postdoctoral Fellow's responsibility to secure the appropriate visa, the host laboratory or program and the Human Resources Department can provide assistance in securing visas. (See UCAR's Foreign Visitor & Scholar Services Web site.)
