Cumulonimbus within tropical storm (DI00121)
Tropical cyclones produce many of the earth's cumulonimbus, or thunderstorm, clouds observed at low latitudes. They are important mechanisms of global energy transfer. Much of the sun's energy reaches the earth's surface in the tropics, and storms transfer this energy to higher latitudes around the globe. Understanding these processes may help to unravel the complexities of the earth's weather-making system.
