Document Title:
Electra during HaRP (DI00011)
Description:
From its base in Broomfield, Colorado, the Lockheed Electra research aircraft (owned by the National Science Foundation and operated by the National Center for Atmospheric Research) went to Hawaii in 1990 to participate in the Hawaiian Rainband Project (HaRP). The four-engine turboprop aircraft made a number of flights above the ocean just east of the Big Island, where converging winds cause rainbands to form in the early morning and dissipate later in the day. Data collected by the Electra was merged with reports from other research aircraft, radar, weather balloons, and surface-based instruments. The findings shed light on rainfall development processes in the tropics and near coastlines.
