Document Title:
Drought in Ethiopia (DI00006) Photo by Mickey Glantz
Description:
Drought can have a devastating effect on a developing country which has few reserves to call on. Ethiopia has been the victim of several droughts in recent history, one lasting from 1972 to 1974 and another in the early 1980s. Many human beings and livestock suffered and died. Crops withered and their prices increased. Drought is often a cyclic phenomenon, it cannot be prevented, but its effects can be foreseen and steps taken to mitigate them.
