The Ampex TBM mass storage system, 1985
Working in the Mesa Lab computer room, a technician loads the Ampex TBM mass storage system. The reels with film weighed 14 pounds and held one Terabyte of data. The Ampex TBM was NCAR’s first mass storage system and served as an archive storing data used and generated by climate models and other programs. It was in use from the late 1970s to 1986.
