Research tower, Niwot Ridge (DI01486)
Scientists involved with the ACME (Airborne Carbon in the Mountains Experiment) field project measured how much carbon dioxide mountain forests remove from the air as spring turns into summer. Perched atop three steel towers provided by NCAR, each between 100 and 200 feet tall, carbon dioxide sensors and sonic anemometers measure changes in carbon levels and winds high above the treetops. This photo shows one of those towers on Niwot Ridge.
