Document Title:
Flood aftermath (DI00382) Photo by Carlye Calvin
Description:
Floods occur most commonly when water from heavy rain, melting ice, and / or melting snow exceeds the carrying capacity of the river system, lake, or ocean into which it runs. Usually the combined flow of several water-swollen tributaries causes flooding along a river bank or shoreline. Floods are not purely destructive, however. Over time, the annual floodwaters of large rivers deposit fertile soil along the surrounding floodplain, benefiting agriculture.
