Karen M. Wilson

Karen received a BA (1980) in International Relations/Economic Emphasis from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and continued graduate coursework in business and accounting at the University of Alaska Anchorage.  After several years in the food brokerage and mortgage banking arena she has spent the last 20 years in research administration, experience including 6 years in university administration at the University of Alaska Fairbanks at department level, as Executive and Fiscal Officers, and at the administration level as the Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Research.  (1988-1994)

From 1994-1995 she served as the Grants Manager for the Lowell Observatory and was promoted, in 1995, to the Secretary-Treasurer/Chief Financial Officer.   As a senior executive officer of a non-profit corporation, responsibilities covered a wide range of administrative and facility operations

Joining, in 2001, the Association of Universities for Research to Astronomy (AURA) which operates the National Optical Astronomy Observatory under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation, as the Associate Director for Administration and Facilities her responsibilities cover all executive management of Central Administrative Services (HR, Accounting/Audit and Grants & Contracts, Procurement, Chilean Site Administration Oversight) and Central Facilities Operations of Tucson operations.    As a senior executive, interacts with major federal agencies, corporations and the community including providing business services to SOAR, LSSTC and WYIN. 

She is the past editor of the newsletter and treasurer for the Flagstaff Rotary, and a member of the Catalina Rotary in Tucson.  She has served on various local Chamber of Commerce and fundraising committees.   Karen served as the program chair and organizer of the annual 2003 Society of Research Administration Western Section meeting, was a member of the SRA Board 2002-2004, and SRA Western Section President 2003-04.  Karen received the 2005 SRA International Poster of the Year award on “A Road-Map to Re-Organization.  She has presented several workshops to SRA International and other societies,  non-profit corporations and universities on Time Management, Re-organizational Models, Budgeting and Strategic Planning, Core Competencies and Performance Management.
