Sustainability and Environmental Factors in Wind Turbine Design and Implementation

Speaker: Warren Schmelzer

Wind turbines are naturally considered an environmentally friendly and sustainable technology because the power production results from a sustainable fuel.  The design, manufacture, and installation of commercial wind turbines however rely on much of the same industrial and logistical base as fossil fuel power production, and may leave a deep footprint in the global eco-system.  We will discuss different types of environmental impacts that may result from the large scale implementation of wind energy systems and identify sustainable features and potential risks of this rapid global resource development.
