Astronomy in Foreign Lands: Adventures in an Intercultural Organization
Speakers: Eduardo Hardy and Mauricio Pilleux
ALMA is not only the largest ground-based astronomy project on Earth, it is also the arena where diverse countries, institutions, cultures and modes of organization rub each other in search of a common ground that is based on a commonality of interests. In a world where the cost and complexity of scientific mega-projects increasingly require a world-based rather than a country-based approach, the understanding, overcoming, and finally tapping on culture and knowledge diversity becomes the only path to greatness.
