VPN Upgrade Instructions

A security update to the VPN client for Windows clients was released by Cisco on May 26, 2006. In compliance with UCAR security policy all Windows clients less than 4.8.01.0300 should be installed within 30 days of the vendor announcement. This update will be automatically pushed to your computer the next time you connect to VPN. The install process takes about 15 minutes, and is disruptive - you will not be able to do any other work while it is happening. If you have an upcoming critical need for VPN, be sure to follow these instructions in advance.

There are 3 stages to the upgrade:

  1. Automatic download
  2. Uninstall of old client
  3. Install of new client

Stage 1 - Automatic download

The next time you connect to VPN, the new client will start downloading, automatically and silently, to your computer. The download takes about 15 minutes if you are on a high-speed connection, longer if you are on dialup. You can work normally while the download is happening. Also, if you disconnect from VPN before it finishes downloading, it will automatically resume downloading the next time you connect. When it finishes, the following box will pop up on your screen:

Click Install Now to start the install process immediately. If you click Install Later, the process will begin as soon as you disconnect from VPN.

Stage 2 - Uninstall of old client

You will see the following box while the client is uninstalling:

Do not click the Cancel button!

When the uninstall has completed, you will see the following:

Click Yes to reboot your system.

Stage 3 - Install of new client

After your computer has rebooted, log in to Windows. If you are used to logging into VPN before logging into Windows, you won't be able to do that - the VPN client has just been uninstalled. When you log in, the following screen will pop up:

Click Next to go to the license screen:

Accept the license and click Next.

Leave the Destination Folder at the default location, and click Next.

Click Next to begin the install.

The installation will take a few minutes. Don't click Cancel!

Click Finish. Also, even though it won't tell you to, reboot your computer. The upgrade of your client is now complete.
