MAG Strategic Plan

I. Executive Overview     (comments)

1.  Multimedia - Communication and collaboration technologies.
2. Introduction to Multimedia at UCAR - In order to meet the growing demands for multimedia services it is necessary to identify short-term strategies and to develop a long-term plan to fulfill these needs. According to the latest Information Technology Council recommendations "UCAR should continue to operate and support a leading-edge network, and associated services…including videoconferencing and multimedia applications". To accomplish these tasks we must inventory existing assets and services and examine the emerging technologies in order to make informed decisions on how best to proceed.
3. Current Status - Currently make presentation and collaboration technologies and services available to the corporation based on existing resources.

II. Strategies     (comments)

1.  Direction - Providing leading-edge collaboration technology including equipment, support and training to scientists, managers and administrators is the primary mission of Multimedia Services.

Provide technologies and services for common meeting areas.

  • Standard multimedia technologies (projectors, sound, lighting and presentation equipment).
  • Enhanced multimedia technologies (Ability to deliver live audio and video to other meeting rooms, the desktop and the web. Ability to capture presentations for archiving purposes.).
2. Infrastructure - Tie in multimedia technologies to networing, desktop services, and support.
3. Innovations - Staying current with emerging technologies.
4. Objectives -
  • Inventory existing assets and services.
  • Maintain and repair existing equipment.
  • Continue multimedia support for UCAR/NCAR/UOP meetings.
  • Assess existing and future demands for multimedia services.
  • Evaluate new technologies including hardware and software.
  • Recommend strategies for maintaining the existing quality of services.
  • Recommend acquisition of new equipment and new services where appropriate.
  • Provide staff training.
  • Provide consulting services to divisions regarding multimedia technologies.
  • Provide input to management as requested regarding decisions about the direction of Multimedia Services.
  • Develop a step-by-step plan for implementing all of the aforementioned strategies.

III.  Options and Recommendations      (comments)

1.  Options - Define alternatives and priorities.
2. Recommendations - Suggest solutions based on customer needs and budget constraints.
3. Implemantation - Coordinate options and recommendations with the ITC and other UCAR committees.

IV.  Services      (comments)

1.  Standard vs. Premium Services - To be defined.
2. Cost Recovery - To be defined.
3. Customers - Potential to be the entire organization.
4. Training - To be defined.
