ART Release Notes

This document lists the key changes from DWOW to ART.  You may also want to check the FAQ page for postings related to "Data Warehouse/ART" and "Crystal Reports" for answers to any questions you may have.

What's New In ART?

New Login Page - ART has a new "look" on the login page, bringing it into alignment with the overall design elements of the other UCAR web applications. It will, however, continue to use a unique logon and password - not the CAS logon that is used for most other UCAR web applications.  All website links to "DW on the Web" will have changed to "ART" when ART is released.  If you find a link we missed, please contact the F&A IT webmaster with the location of that link.

Navigation - The general layout and navigation of the ART pages are very similar to what you have had in DWOW for some years. Now, however, the graphic elements have been customized to reflect the common design of the UCAR web applications. One navigation change of note is the path for changing your Report Viewer preferences (necessary if changing from using Mozilla to Internet Explorer, for example).  Before it was simply a matter of clicking on the Preferences button at the top right corner of the window.  Now, after clicking on the Preferences button, you will then need to click on the "Crystal Reports" link on the top left portion of the Preferences window.

New Folders - While many are not populated at the release of ART, additional folders to house customized reports for the NCAR Laboratories and Institutes have been implemented.  As reports are developed in the coming years to be shared by staff within the various entities, they will be posted in the associated folder.

Report Modifications - A number of the division-based reports inherited from DWOW have been enhanced to allow multiple division codes, and an example, multiple variations on how many and which account keys will be chosen to display in the report.  Some examples of this are the "Paymentnet" reports in the Financial Summaries folder, a number of the HR reports in the Division HR reports folder, and the "Fiscal YTD Transaction Detail By Division" report in the Revenue & Expenditure Detail folder.

Export to Excel Fixed - When exporting to Excel from DWOW, it was necessary to unmerge the cells and redefine the print area due to a bug in the Crystal Enterprise 8.5 application that ran DWOW.  That bug has been fixed in the Crystal Enterprise 10 application that runs ART, and the resulting exported reports are much easier to work with in Excel than before.

Access to More Data - Over the years, more and more Crystal Reports have been developed to access data from other locations than the Data Warehouse.  Within the ART system, data from additional databases such as Bi-Tech (yes, we're "going live"!), EventMaster, Advance Notice, Remedy and the new HR Information System will be made available accordingly. Hence the new name "Administrative Reporting Tool", rather than just the Data Warehouse On the Web.  Look for more exciting developments on this front in the near future!

Impact to Crystal Report Writers - ART operates on the Crystal Enterprise 10 application.  This system can only display Crystal Reports from Crystal Reports version 9 or 10. When you download a copy of a report for customization from ART, it can only be opened in one of these two versions of Crystal Reports.  Downloading "originals" of reports before modification is the recommended procedure, as this provides you with the most up-to-date version of the report available, as opposed to re-using a previously-modified copy of the report that may be on your computer. It is important to note that many of the reports that were inherited from the DWOW system were re-written and improved as part of the upgrade to ART.

Keep in mind that if you wish to post a report to the ART application to share with others in your work group, the same version compatibility constraints apply. Per launch date of March 3, 2005, all current Crystal Reports writers in UCAR have been notified of this and recommendation given to upgrade their installation of Crystal Reports to a minimum of version 9 to stay in sync with the Web-based application.
